How to Know If Someone Blocked You on Instagram (Blocked vs Deactivated)

Instagram never tells you when you are blocked. Here is the one test that separates a block from a deactivated account, the five signs that point to a block, and the things that look like a block but are not.

Instagram never tells you when someone blocks you. There's no notification, no message and no list. But a block leaves clear traces, and one simple test tells you whether you were blocked or the account just disappeared.

The quick answer

Open their profile in a logged-out browser window (or ask a friend to look them up):

  • Visible to others, not to you → you're blocked.
  • Not visible to anyone → the account was deactivated or deleted (or the username changed).

Everything else in this guide is a supporting clue.

The one test that settles it: the logged-out check

  1. On your phone or computer, open a private/incognito browser window.
  2. Go to instagram.com/their-username.
  3. Compare with what you see in the app while logged in.

If the profile (or at least its name, photo and post count) loads while you're logged out, but your account can't find it, the account exists and is hiding from you. That's a block.

If it doesn't load logged out either, the account is deactivated, deleted or renamed. Instagram may also limit what logged-out visitors can see, so the most dependable version of this test is asking a friend to search the exact username from their account.

5 signs that point to a block

None of these is proof on its own. Two or three together, plus the logged-out check, are.

  1. Their profile doesn't appear in search, even when you type the exact username.
  2. Their profile opens empty: no posts, no follower counts, or "No posts yet", while friends can see everything.
  3. Old DMs are still there, but their name won't open a profile. The conversation history stays; tapping their name leads nowhere.
  4. You can't tag or mention them. Their username won't autocomplete in comments or captions.
  5. Your old likes and comments on their posts are gone (you can check from a friend's phone).

Things that look like a block but aren't

  • Deactivated account. It disappears for everyone, then comes back if they reactivate. The logged-out check tells you which it is.
  • Deleted account. Gone for everyone, permanently.
  • Changed username. The old handle stops working. Search their name or check a mutual friend's following list.
  • Restricted, not blocked. If they restricted you, you can still see their profile. Your comments are only visible to you, and your DMs land in their message requests.
  • Removed as a follower. On a private account you'll see the Follow button again and lose access to their posts, but the profile is still findable.
  • You're logged into the wrong account. It sounds obvious, but it happens a lot when you manage more than one.

What a block actually does

When someone blocks you, from your account you can't see their profile, posts or Stories, message them, tag them or find them in search. They aren't notified when you look for them. If they later unblock you, you won't be told either; you'd also have to follow them again.

Should you use a "who blocked me" app?

No. Instagram doesn't share block data with anyone, so these apps can only guess, and most of them want your Instagram password, which can get your account locked or stolen. The free checks above are the most reliable ones that exist. More warning signs in are Instagram profile viewer apps safe.

FAQ

Does Instagram notify you when someone blocks you?

No. Instagram never sends a notification when someone blocks you.

What is the most reliable way to tell if I am blocked?

Open their profile logged out, or ask a friend to look it up. Visible to others but not to you means you're blocked. Visible to nobody means the account is likely deactivated or deleted.

Does "User not found" mean I am blocked?

Not on its own. It also appears when an account is deactivated, deleted, or renamed.

Can a blocked person still see my profile?

Not from the account you blocked. If your profile is public, they can still see it logged out or from another account.

Is being restricted the same as being blocked?

No. A restricted person can still see your profile; their comments are just hidden from others and their DMs go to requests.
